McKenzie County's real estate options are also diverse, with properties ranging from modest starter homes to sprawling McKenzie County estates. In addition to all of those advantageous features, the county offers easy access to incredible recreation opportunities at equally impressive destinations like Lake Sakakawea, National Grasslands, and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Its friendly residents, stable banks, low taxes, absence of traffic, quality medical facilities, low insurance costs, modest housing costs, well-respected school system, and clean air provide a quality of life that is hard to resist. Today, progressive technology combined with old-west traditions makes McKenzie County a one-of-a-kind place to call home. Later Schafer became the county seat until 1940, when Watford City became the seat and has been since. However, it wasn’t until 1905 the county became official, and Alexander was named as its seat. Then in 1883, the county was formed and named after a North Dakota politician named Alexander McKenzie. This well-established county has a long history and rich heritage, once inhabited by native Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa tribes. In western North Dakota, scenic McKenzie County is home to petrified forests, petroleum deposits, fossils, rolling fields of wheat, prairie grasses, sagebrush, and ragged buttes.
